An ambassador in London in 2008
Semmaris opened a branch office at New Covent Garden wholesale market in London on 29 October 2007. The running of this office was entrusted to an "ambassador" for the Rungis brand, a solution already successfully tested by large French companies, notably in the luxury goods industry. Less than two months later, Semmaris signed a cooperation agreement with CGMA (Covent Garden Market Authority). The objective was to share information and experience regarding to business development and sales promotion in particular. The United Kingdom remains a leading export market for Rungis, with French gastronomy strongly represented in a very developed catering industry. Like the partnership signed with Madrid, a common stand was shared with New Covent Gardent. the London Hotelympia trade show in February 2008.
The Rungis' brand ambassador has been working on a daily basis to promote the Market’s reputation and first class image with its B to B clientele across the Channel – local chefs and distributors – by meeting them all personally and helping them to develop and diversify their supplies via Rungis. The ambassador also acted as an advisor to Market companies who wanted to develop their exports to the United Kingdom, receiving companies and arranging meetings with professionals on site, posting fact sheets and surveys online, etc. Lastly, he has helped to create specific communication tools for export, particularly the English version of the website rungisinternational.com, and has benn working directly with the specialist press and trade associations, such as the French Culinary Association of Great Britain, of which Rungis was a partner in 2008..
Catering across the ChannelIn the United Kingdom, 8.6 billion meals were consumed outside the home in 2006. Within that total, commercial catering accounts for a turnover of roughly twenty billion euros, split between traditional restaurants (30%), snacks (30%), pubs (28%) and fast-food outlets (12%).
